People and mountain planning

Find ski buddies and snowboard friends in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho

These mountains are far apart, so a Northern Rockies riding group usually forms around one resort and one set of dates. A Big Sky week, a Jackson Hole trip, a Sun Valley weekend, and a day at Whitefish are separate plans. Start with the mountain, then the travel.

Make a meetup that fits the journey

Riders often arrive from different cities, so meeting at the resort is usually simpler than coordinating a shared journey. Decide whether you want a first morning together or company for the whole trip. Compare comfort on the terrain you have in mind; steep advanced terrain is a different conversation from cruising groomers.

Use ski club and community resources to look for existing groups. Our riding buddy meetup checklist helps you agree on terrain, pace, and a first meeting.

Read the mountain forecast before confirming

Each resort has its own mountain forecast, so compare the outlook for the place you will ride, including wind and temperature. Check the resort's report for current operations, then use the state road service for each part of the drive.

Montana road conditions on 511MT, Wyoming road conditions on WYDOT 511, and Idaho road conditions on Idaho 511. Learn how to read a ski resort snow forecast, then check the individual mountain pages below.
